SUMMER SCHOOL

The Odessa Summer School program is being offered once again this summer from Wednesday, June 2nd, thru Tuesday, June 29th, 20 days of instruction. This program is for students who will be enrolled in the 2021-2022 year.  Summer School builds on your student’s educational foundation with a curriculum designed to mirror what students learn throughout the school year and build confidence and knowledge as they head into the next grade level.

The plan for summer school includes the following:

  • Transportation WILL NOT provided.  Parents will be responsible to make arrangements to drop-off and pick-up their child.
  • Masks will be required for students and staff to wear when we are not able to socially distanced.  We will practice frequent hand washing and sanitizing as well.  Meals will be eaten in the classrooms.
  • Summer school will be held at McQuerry (PreK-5th), OMS (6th Grade Academy and Attendance Recovery), and OHS (9th-12th).

Students K-5th grade will be placed in grade level classes and will receive instruction in Reading, Writing, and Math.  Students will then be allowed to choose a block of Enrichment instruction.  The focus will be to provide additional teaching, activities, and assessments at the students level of learning. During the last hour of instruction, students will get a small choice of activities to be involved in.  Examples of offerings are traveling “around the world”, Scholastic News, Camping, origami, and science/engineering activities.

McQuerry (K-2nd) and Odessa Upper Elementary (3rd -5th) student classes will meet from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at McQuerry Elementary.  Parents dropping off students (PreK-5th) at McQuerry will be required to utilize the Kiss and Go lane in the front of the school (there will be teachers on duty beginning at 7:45 a.m).  Parents will also pick up students using the Kiss and Go Lane at McQuerry. Parents will not be permitted for arrival and dismissal, everyone will be required to utilize the Kiss and Go Lane.

The OMS 6th grade Academy is a class you do not want your 2021-2022 6th grader to miss! Middle  School is a fun new experience. Students enrolled in the Summer Academy will learn all the skills they need to have a successful transition into middle school. Students will learn OMS building procedures and expectations, along with how to use their lockers while transitioning to several classes during the day. Breakfast and lunch will be provided free of charge by the school. The academy will feature a fun, multi-subject unit exploring Australia.  OMS will also be offering attendance recovery to students who are selected to attend.  This will only be a two week session for students needing to makeup missed time.

Odessa High School will house its respective summer activities.  OHS will offer classes for a morning session 8:00-11:00, and an afternoon session 11:30-2:30 p.m.  OHS will have numerous offerings for their students including Health, PE, Public Speaking, Personal Finance, Computer Applications and Practical Arts.  Applications have already been offered and classes are filling up fast! A reminder to the parents of and students at OMS and OHS, there is a strict attendance requirement for the summer sessions.  To earn a credit for your high school work it is mandatory to meet the attendance requirements.

The Jump Start! Pre-K Summer School program is once again being offered.  This program is for students entering Kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year.  The focus of Jump Start! is on routines and readiness skills.  Students will work on curriculum objectives designed for their grade level, as well as learning the “basics” of Kindergarten behavior/expectations.  Students will work on the alphabet, pre-writing, and math skills.  Students will also learn how to manage themselves in a large group, follow directions, walk in a line with others, practice good manners, experience the playground, and work in social situations with their peers.  This a great opportunity for students to become familiar with how school is going to look and sound.  The classes will meet from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  All students will eat lunch at school.  You can either send a lunch with them, or they will be able to eat free breakfast and lunch everyday. Arrival and dismissal will occur on the blacktop of the McQuerry Playground with the PreK teachers assisting.  Drop off will begin at 7:45 a.m. and pickup will be at 11:30 a.m.  Please use the parking lot at the high school and use the gate on the south side of the playground.  The McQuerry gym will be used for arrival and dismissal in cases of inclement weather.

Remember to take advantage of the Free Meal opportunities during the summer school session.  Summer is a great time to extend student learning! We hope to see you at Odessa R-VII Summer School.
