Junior Timeline

Your Junior year is a important time in the college planning process.  You will be busy trying to narrow down your career and college choices.  Here are few things to keep you on track:

  • Maintain grades: Each year is just as important as the next.  Keep working hard to keep your GPA in good standing.
  • Stay involved: Keep participating in sports, clubs and organizations.  These experiences will help you become a well-rounded student and may spark some new interests.
  • Update portfolio: Make sure you update all information in your folder (grades, new activities, offices, etc.).  This will help you when you start filling out college applications your senior year.
  • Check transcripts:  Check to make sure all information is correct on your transcripts.  If you notice something is missing or incorrect please let us know as soon as possible.
  • ACT/PSAT/ASVAB: Prepare to take the ACT during your junior year.  You will want to take it early enough so you will have time to get the score you need for college admissions and scholarships.  The PSAT (Pre-SAT) is administered during October.  This exam qualifies you for the National Merit Scholarship competition and will give you a projected SAT score.  The ASVAB is vocational aptitude test that can provide you valuable information about your career interests and abilities.  This is the exam used by the military to place recruits in careers, however by taking this exam you are not committing to the military in any way.
  • Compare/Contrast colleges: Start looking at which colleges will be a good fit for you. Things to consider: private or public, size, location, academic programs, cost, campus activities, etc. Schedule a college visit day with your top choices during the Spring so you can get a real feel for the campus.
  • Meet with college representatives:  During the year, college representatives will visit OHS students to provide information about their campuses and answer questions from potential students.
  • Maintain employment: Having a steady job gives you valuable experience and allows you to continue saving money for college expenses.
